To ride electric is a transformative experience by Prof Anton Eberhard

My name’s Anton Eberhard. I’m a Professor at the Power Futures Lab at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business.

I’ve been riding an EWIZZ electric scooter for the past couple of years and it’s been a transformative experience. I love it.

Basically, to “ride electric” is a no brainer. It’s economical, it’s environmentally clean, it’s silent, it’s reliable, it’s fast and it’s a great experience.

Why? Because it is absolutely the easiest way to get to work, or to scoot around the neighbourhood, down to my regular café for breakfast, coffee and a newspaper, or multiple other errands, where one doesn’t have to worry about parking.  It’s silent, clean and accelerates wonderfully!  It is also less expensive to own and much cheaper to buy or run than a Vespa. I don’t get all these Cape Town hipsters with their Vespas. I know they’re cool. But, hey, to ride electric is just way cooler.

I smile a bit when we wait together at traffic lights. The other scooters are belching fumes. At best they sound like sewing machines, more often like lawn mowers, and then I scoot ahead when the lights change.  I think it won’t be long before there will be an inexorable switch over to electric. I keep telling Andy to import more and get the message out there. It will happen.

I have an entry level EWIZZ Spark 3 N40, which is perfect for my needs. It has a range of around 75km and my charge has never been below 50%. It’s really simple to recharge each night – simply plug in to a normal 220V socket. Thinking about the cost of electricity to run it, I bought an inline meter to exactly measure my electricity consumption but now I don’t bother. It’s negligible, so, no question, it makes economic sense.

Not only is the initial outlay a third of the cost of a Vespa, but the running cost is a fraction of filling up with petrol, and the maintenance cost is so much less, essentially because there are much fewer moving parts – no pistons or crankshafts or…….. ;  simply an electric motor mounted in the rear wheel.

Battery technology is advancing rapidly, with performance up and costs down. Andy at EWIZZ also provides excellent and personalised service.
